Mumbai: Capital class! Rajdhani Express completes golden run on May 17,
The service started just three years after the first Rajdhani—India’s first fully air-conditioned train—began between New Delhi and Howrah (Kolkata),
MUMBAI: Next Tuesday will be another special day in the city’s railway annals: the Mumbai-New Delhi Rajdhani Express—India’s premier passenger train—will complete a golden run. Exactly 50 years ago on May 17, 1972, the train had made its inaugural journey from the then Bombay Central to the national capital.

service started just three years after the first Rajdhani—India’s first fully air-conditioned train—began between New Delhi and Howrah (Kolkata). Before it, Mumbai had other trains like Frontier Mail and Paschim Express to Delhi, but none had New Delhi as the terminating station.
"The date May 17 is a historic day in Indian Railway’s history as India’s premier train was introduced to connect the commercial capital of the country with the political capital,” said WR’s chief public relations officer Sumit Thakur.
50-years-young Rajdhani on track to cut journey to 12 hrs,
In the 50 years since the Rajdhani Express connecting the commerical and political capitals was flagged off, two more Rajdhani Express trains and other fully AC trains like Garib Rath Express, Yuva Express and Duronto Express have been added to the busy route.
The Rajdhani has constantly upgraded its locomotives, coaches, services over the last 50 years to maintain its premier position on Indian tracks. What started as a journey over 19 hours and 5 minutes has been shortened to 15 hours and 50 minutes between Mumbai to Delhi.
"When the train was introduced, it was hauled by single WDM–2 diesel locomotives. Later WAP locos were used in areas with electric traction. Mumbai to Vadodara was not electrified, and so locomotives had to be changed,” said a railway official. The problem was solved with the introduction of a dual traction AC-DC locomotive in 1993. The route became all-electric at the turn of the millennium.
In December 2003, the new Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) rakes designed for a higher speed of 140 kmph with anti-skid disc brakes, and anti-telescopic and anti-climbing features were introduced for the Rajdhani. Now, the train runs with Tejas class rakes with smart technology and plush interiors.
Till 1988, Rajdhani, with a maximum speed of 120 kmph, was the fastest in Indian Railways. Now, the modern Vande Bharat trains and a few Shatabdis run faster, but officials said in the next four years, track upgradation will allow the Rajdhani to zip at 160 kmph, shrinking the journey time to 12 hours.
A few other operational processes have changed: initially it had only technical halts, no passengers could board en route. The policy changed and passenger halts are now allowed at Surat, Vadodara Junction, Ratlam and Kota Junction.
But the express remains the top dog on tracks. “Rajdhani class trains are given priority above all classes of trains. Top officials seek explanation for even minor delays,” said a senior official. “Only the senior-most loco pilot with an excellent track record is selected to operate this train.”

“Further upgradation/beautification of stations on Indian Railways is a continuous and on-going process and works in this regard are undertaken as per requirement, subject to inter-se priority and availability of funds. On the expenditure being incurred in undertaking these upgradations, Vaishnaw said, “The details of allocation and expenditure for development and maintenance of stations are maintained zonal Railway-wise and not station-wise or state-wise.”
