India’s most unique railway station: Rajasthan’s Rashidpur Khori

Rashidpura Khori village in Rajasthan, India, hosts the only railway station in the country managed entirely by its residents, a testament to community empowerment. Initially closed by authorities, villagers revived it through grassroots efforts, surpassing revenue targets and boosting local development. This success story highlights the power of community action and resourcefulness in overcoming challenges, ultimately transforming the station into a symbol of pride and unity.

Rashidpura Khori is a small village in Rajasthan, India, that has a remarkable distinction: It is home to the only railway station in India that is run and maintained by the villagers themselves, without any involvement of railway employees or officials. Quite literally, this is a railway station by the people, for the people. This railway station, which is almost a century old, has a fascinating history and an inspiring story of community empowerment and resilience.

The history of Rashidpura Khori railway station
The Rashidpura Khori railway station was built by the British in 1923, as part of the Jaipur-Churu railway line. The station served as a vital link for the villagers, who depended on it for their transportation, trade, and communication needs. The station also witnessed many historical events, such as the freedom struggle, the partition, and the Indo-Pak wars.

However, in 2005, the railway authorities decided to close down the station, citing low revenue and high maintenance costs. The villagers were shocked and dismayed by this decision, as they feared losing their lifeline and their identity. They appealed to the railway authorities to reconsider their decision but to no avail. They also approached the local politicians and the media, but they did not get any support or attention.

The efforts to revive the railway station

The villagers did not give up hope and decided to take matters into their own hands. They formed a committee and met with the railway officials, who agreed to reopen the station on one condition: The villagers had to generate a minimum revenue of Rs. 3 lakh per month from ticket sales, and take care of the station's maintenance and security. The villagers accepted the challenge and signed a memorandum of understanding with the railway authorities in 2009.

The villagers then launched a massive campaign to promote the station and its services. They went door-to- door, informing the people about the train timings and fares, and urging them to use the station. They also distributed pamphlets, put up posters, and made announcements on loudspeakers. They also contacted the nearby villages, and offered them discounts and incentives to use the station.

The villagers also took charge of the station's operations and management. They appointed some of their members as ticket sellers, station masters, guards, and cleaners. They also arranged for water, electricity, and sanitation facilities at the station. They also ensured the safety and comfort of the passengers, and maintained the cleanliness and hygiene of the station.

A success story

The village's fortunes turned around as the station transformed into a thriving success story. Revenue surpassed expectations, drawing in more passengers and fostering a bustling hub of commerce. This newfound activity catalyzed village development, elevating the quality of life for its inhabitants.

The station also became a source of pride and inspiration for the villagers, and a symbol of their unity and strength. It received recognition and appreciation from various quarters, such as the media, the government, and the civil society. The station went on to become a tourist attraction, and a model of community participation and empowerment.

The Rashidpura Khori railway station is a unique and remarkable example of how a village can overcome challenges and achieve its goals, by taking ownership and responsibility of its resources and services. It is also a testament to the power and potential of the people, who can make a difference and create a positive impact, with their determination and dedication.
