Coach maintenance was temporarily shifted to Madurai due to the ongoing renovation work in Rameswaram. The Southern Railway has announced that this change affects the maintenance of Tirupati and Kanyakumari bound trains.

However, Southern Railways clarified this was a misinterpretation; the project is ongoing. Tamil Nadu's Transport Minister SS Sivasankar countered, stating that over 926 hectares of land had been acquired across three districts and the state government had consistently requested funding. While Rs. 100 crore was allocated in 2023-24, Southern Railway had proposed freezing it due to perceived low viability. An 18 km section (Milavittan-Melmarudur) was completed by March 2022 and approved for operations. The incident sparked a blame game between the DMK and BJP in Tamil Nadu.

Piling work for the concourse is complete, and the substation building is over 60% complete. A temporary access route from the national highway to the platform is inaugurated to ease passenger inconvenience.
