Sundays , is always a terror , for the Chennai Bangalore section . For the travellers , it's getting a ticket between the 2 cities post the 2nd half of day. For section controllers , to handle the trains in this section . Many weeklies decide to make their presence felt in afternoon on Chennai Jolarpettai section, and it's back to back handling, along with the freight to be handled .

Jan 28th was one such long weekend . Jan month is a terror for the North trains , when the fog
...
makes not only people but trains too to sleep under the blanket . They get up lazily , have a late slow move and end up delayed by hours . And when they land up in these busy schedules , one cannot make out but wonder whether it's train traffic or road traffic

The WAP4 gives a loud honk on a pleasant winter afternoon . It was way pleasant considering Chennai standards , that the sun was not burning on us when we boarded the rake on PF-7 , which has been standing there for about 3 odd hours. The incoming WAP-4 was staying blocked waiting for the rake to move . And it was time to provide the release

WAP7 pulled into PF-6 just as we were exiting , with the 10+ hours late running 12616 Grand Trunk express . WAP7 of KJM waited on PF-8 with the 12607 Lalbagh express , the evening crowd slowly trickling in . The 2S of this train is as good as a peak hour BMTC bus and CC was way ahead in waitlist when I checked it a month back . I guess it's ages since I actually took a 2S for this section . It requires a huge dare at times now I feel , though in my college days used to be excited for it .

WAP-7 awaited on PF-9 , with the Trivandrum bound 12695 . There were huge crowds waiting for this train in groups for see off. The weekly 12698 missed my attention as I joked to my Dad , " if someone sees only 4 digits of train number , a person bound to Bangalore could get into Trivandrum train departing in just 10 mins gap ".

We just crawled ,trotted , slowly crossing points to move out . No hurry we will go slowly seemed to be the WAP4 motive. TNP WDM-7 shunted the 12603 Hyderabad express rake . A EMU entered into MMCC and another exited

Checked the status of trains online . 12296 from Danapur was running late and had switched points from BBQ line to move into Vyasarpadi . We crossed past slowly from BBQ and showed no signs of hurrying . Vyasarpadi Jeeva was crossed, 12296 was nowhere near the points when we passed through . A slow glide past Perambur, huge crowd was waiting on PF-1. The 12295 bound to Danapur was the culprit for this crowd, and online showed he had crossed Bangarpet towards Kuppam. That's almost another 4 hours of waiting for them, if not lesser. He would be Vande Bharat 's prey too enroute

Perambur, Perambur loco works, Perambur carriage works, Villivakkam all went at slow speeds , and while we approached Korattur it was almost 20 minutes since we left Central. WAP4 started showing its colours and within minutes Ambattur , Annanur, Avadi were despatched like lightnings . Chennai bound 22638 West coast whizzed past us near Korattur . Another LHB rake crossed us near Annanur , and checked online to find it was the 20954 weekly from Ahmedabad. This was followed by the 12163 Super from LTT just before Tiruvallur

Our coach was completely full and almost everyone had thaken their berths, except for few , like me & dad. The LB, MB combo , we had entire berth for ourselves to sit comfortably. Mom was sound asleep in SLB, the SUB and UB allotted to a couple who chose to lie down as soon as they boarded . The bay behind was occupied by a ladies group with 3-4 kids , the kids settling down for window seats on SLB, SUB, all of them neatly positioning watching window. Thankfully they spent time playing physically and jumping rather than meddling the devices . Me & my dad of course had lots to talk, for it's a train journey during the day , and one of regular routes .

The recent rains of December had ensured that water bodies were full ,though the rivers weren't as full. The fields were ready for ploughing, some being ploughed , while some were still green. All the fields has the contrasting white dotted all over, with the Egrets occupying every place on the fields. Drongos filed across, and Open bill storks showed their presence occasionally, their sizes overshadowing the egrets. Stilts walked across the shallow waters of the lakes, while cormorants peeped out of their swim , while a few dried their feathers on tree barks or land . Kingfishers gave aerial views while the Swift's were as usual Swift in their action veering around in various angles across the sky . The views continued till the dusk across almost till Vaniyambadi , but the Kusasthalaiyaaru, and Pennai were relatively not so active

We had a major slowdown at Thiruvallur around 1545 hours, slowly trotting past the platform , clearing the points , but we were still on the main line , not switching to the slow line. The slow run continued till Egattur, where again we picked up speed to touch close to 3 digit figures, having a parallel run with the NMG rake hauled by WAG12B on the slow line, who could have been the reason why we had to be slow , as we crossed Kadambattur

The run continued till Tiruvalangadu, where we slowed down to switch points towards the slow line , to cross past Mosur and Puliyamangalam , to pull into a crowded platform of AJJ, awaiting the continuous trains coming one behind other for weekend. Announcement boarded it was the Hubbali weekly entering , and there were quite some takers for this train too .

A few ladies from neighbouring bay selected AJJ as place to deboard to fetch water , and WAP4 was quick enough to start as already he was delayed by 10 mins owing to the slow runs initially. The pull out bought out tense moments for the group, but luckily the ladies had boarded with chill water bottles in time . EMU from CGL entered into PF-1A as there was another EMU with CGL board stationed on the last corner PF

WAG12B hauled freight gave a parallel company till the exit and we left it to take the JTJ line. 70 kms in about 60 mins and we had noone ahead , while we were leading 4 trains trailing us in short gaps and we had no time to wait

How is this going to be tackled !! The last time I travelled by this train was when it was 17313 way back in 2015 , when departure time was 1350, and we had a long wait at JTJ. Then too Sanghamitra trailed us, as per his RT schedule. Today too he is behind, but delayed by hours . He was followed by Pataliputra , same as then.

2015 to 2024 is a pretty long time indeed . S6 has increased to S9, B1 to B3 and 17313 is now 22698. And WAP4 has 2 concerns with it now. It's hauling a superfast and its leading the way. There is a trail of trains running behind

A WAG9 hauled freight waited at the Melpakkam byepass as we increase our speed into Anavardhikkanpettai, the siding lines occupied by line up of car carrier silver liveried ventilated mesh rakes . 3 in 3 off the sidings .
...

We have a quick run now, for we don't have to halt at any of the stations where the daily intercities stop. Our coach had been thoroughly watered and mopped during PFTR at Chennai, and with the major crowd settled in berths, the coach is still spic and span

Freights passed us at regular intervals . This is a sort of a break time for passenger trains in this side , before the evening intercities make their way through crossing KPD, the 1st among them would be the Vande Bharat

In the melee of the freights , we lost track of the stations we were passing through , till we approached Marudalam, where the freight was looped across the island platform and the guard made his way out of the cabin. Quickly a LHB coach crossed past us ripping apart the freight... Who was this ...quick online check .. Nagercoil Kacheguda special express via Renigunta running about 90 mins late .

We quickly make our way past Walajah road and my eyes keep watch on kilometre marking on opposite track . The km kept increasing and as we crossed VIT campus and slowed down for a halt, it was just around 2 hours run for 129 kms , as we entered KPD at 1703 hours onto a very crowded PF-1 , waiting for every train that is going to cross now .

A tea vendor catches our attention and we get the 3 cups from the PF window and hand over the cash just in time for the WAP4 to signal departure . Huge crowd on PF-3 was coupled with announcement made for incoming 12295 Sanghamitra from SMVT to DNR , running about 4 hours late . We had a few UR passengers occupying doorsteps, but wasn't abnormal or disturbing. Sleeper coach + limited stop run keeping crowd away from this weekly still, similar to what it was 8 years ago

We slowly change the points moving out as a WAP7 crawls past with the 12295 the SL and UR competing with the crowd , as typical of its everyday run . We accelerated pretty quickly to despatch the station of Latteri, the 20608 Vande Bharat to Chennai quickly whizzes past us near Kavanur the relative speed made the 16 coacher whizz past like a lighting , before we have a slow down again and come to a almost complete halt before Gudiyattam before slowly picking up again to cross past a freight awaiting on the loop .

There were hiccups in the run and we had a good slowdown again trotting past Melalthur and a not a very good speedy run, felt the speed picking up. A loud honk indicated we were to show off something to someone . A series of ICF seater coach + a solo C1 hauled by WAP4 haul was our prey for the day , the 22617 Tirupati SMVT sidelined at Valathoor as we accelerated past him at good speed

The evening show has now started on the opposite side and we were waiting for the action to begin . The online network was kept ready for the same as Dad pipped " Without seeing online , one train can't you say ". I looked back " I used to carry TAAG with me and tell with that.. that feeling was different" he replied . "With trainsnlike Nagercoil Kacheguda weekly specials crossing what else to expect. Online only option . Now see what's coming next ". Who else , Double decker right asked Dad

A WAP7 crossed past as Dad remarked - Vantaana .... I smiled ...LHB UR - SL - AC coaches in consist...Yaaru...18190 Ernakulam Tata Biweekly - Ex Dhanbad slip now slipped off .... Oh oh...get me TAAG soon da , what's all this , he asked. Ordered pa, let's see I replied ...( That it was collected by our neighbours and duly handed over the next day was the icing on the cake, that has kept dad busy entire week as of now )

A WAG9 twins hauled freight crossed us next, before a WAP7 came across with the tiny caterpillar flying past us with the double decker coaches. In the wink the entire 22626 had crossed us and vanished out of sight .

Again a freight consist and I went to the restroom to use and come back .. no train went said my Dad, as I occupied my seat just in time for the 12640 to rush past us . Dad went to the restroom now and just as he returned , there was a flurry of AC coaches blasting past us.. Yaaruda .... 90 mins late running 22354 Patna Humsafar pa, remember long time back after booking bus ticket told ticket was available in this to Perambur, that guy . You people have gone mad , and just see the demand for every damn train running . And still there is demand . And freight is just sandwiched .

Everything happens pa, sometimes freight is given priority too , I said. Yes they have schedule , but see this traffic . Back to back trains just going back , and with delays , every minute counts. One train delayed everything will go haywire and have to be adjusted. Can't imagine the situation

Barely had we finished talking as another LHB consist flew past us , the 13352 bound to Dhanbad from Allapuzha. Oh the crawler and it's slip are now clones to each other . Yes yes and crawler also has picked up speed , I replied , as well approached the 210 km mark , slowly trugging on the bridge , to mark our entry into JTJ. It was now time for the 22619 Tirunelveli Bilaspur express to make the way through

Slowly moving under the flyover , we clank past the points as a WAG9 hauled BOXN prepared to leave JTJ yard behind the 22619. We are sent through into PF-4 and I hope to grab some quick bite. The time is 1810 hours , a 3 hours 10 mins run for the 214 kms . Lesser stops being the only advantage for the speed looks like

Announcement go in succession for the entering 22698, soon to enter 22617, not very back 12698, indicating lead has been taken by 12698 and 12296 is sent back

WAP7 soon pulls into PF-5 and slowly and steadily pulls into a halt , even as announcement said that a train would be passing through PF-5 shortly , raising the question in all the spectators mind - Why did the 12008 stop at Jolarpettai !!

Entering into Jolarpettai and leaving without a bite isn't a cup of tea . And so is the case when a seller comes with 4 vadas and piping hot sambhar at Rs.50/- a plate. Quickly got hold of them and gobbles them up, pretty crispy indeed .

WAP-4 in meantime pulls into PF-2 with the 22617, just as we get ready to leave and so does the shatabdi. The shatabdi had a good 3 mins halt , but he has stil 3 hrs 15 mins to cover the same distance what we
...
have just covered in 3 hrs and 10. For a moment it was 3 moving trains on 3 different platforms , 2 in same direction, one halting, one leaving and other onenin opposite direction.

Dusk settles in as we leave the line towards CBE and veer towards the state border . Another freight waits at the outer for the clearance to cross through JTJ . Various other freights wait at the pass through lines at the corner as we trundle past

A quick acceleration through the byepass railway bridge and the JTJ curve is soon tackled to catch the line coming from Coimbatore byepassing Jolarpettai . A quick run through Somanayakkanpatti through the platform line , a station with 2 platform line and one through line , the SBC side platform line being a main and the JTJ bound being on loop

We slow down post Somanayakkanpatti and I fear the worst . 2015 fears haven't gone past , of we waiting at Patchur for 2 back to back overtakes . But today tables have reversed and it was 22617 at the receiving end today and it won't be a reovertake

Quickly we accelerated past approaching Patchur , where a freight was sidelined for us . A unique station post the doubling of the section, where the up and down lines do not have a connecting point . But the SBC bound line has a loop line for the island platform , flanked on other side by the JTJ bound single line without the loop . What to call this kind of station ??

Anyway up and down lines play hide and seek in this Andhra Tamilnadu border across the Eastern Ghats , so any crossings are also missed , until Mulanur where a freight was looped and an unknown trainncrossed . Online also couldn't reveal the exact train and who it was still remains a mystery

WAP7 accelerates past us , as the point switching clanks are heard . We were ripping past Kuppam at MPS crossing the Kochuveli bound 16315 from Mysore . Darkness had set in, as the time ticks past 1845 hours .

Online status revealed that 12609 was nearing Malur , indicating the huge clearance we had , if not for any freight ahead. The Jolarpettai bound 16519 MEMU express crosses in meantime . An express since earlier days , not a recent converted express

We had a quick run to enter into Bangarpet junction by 1925 hrs , and UR crowd waiting boarded our train, but still peaceful enough . May be strategically in middle of consist we have our advantage still of not being badly encroached , and no chaos definitely .

A quick departure and we predict the KJM arrival around 2010-2015 hours as a normal run . A quick acceleration and a blast past, the stations of Maralahalli, Byatarayanadoddi , the Marikuppam bound MEMU were left wondering what was happening , as our quick runs continued . Stations were crossed in quick succession , the darkness of the evening visited by flashes of light as we cross every station

Passenger started moving with their relatives and luggage blocking the door as mom tried to make her eat to the restroom . Wait na Ma'am another 5 minutes we will get down, said a lady , as mom tried to make her way back. 5 mins ?? It's going to take minimum 20 mins and I also need to get down at KJM, said my mom , forcing her way back into the bay, slyly grinning at the people behaviour

Malur was soon despatched with a loud continuous honk, the IOC Devangonthi coming into sight sooner and pretty very soon , the perinicts of Bangalore was visible with the metro station of Kadugodi coming into sight on opposite line as Whitefield station was quickly conquered . The 16319 Kochuveli bound Humsafar too crossed us in meanwhile

12609 had meanwhile crossed Baiyappanhalli and moved into Bangalore East, and we were happily given go ahead. The metro line meets us back on the Whitefield road after its detour into the Satya Sai Hospital - Kundalahalli area and we were slowly we pulled into PF-4 of KJM at 2003 hrs , earlier than our expectations, covering the 345 kms in 5 hrs and 3 mins , the WAP4 + ICF making a mincemeat of the schedule they had been allocated , as roar of EoG was heard

Now who is this guy we wondered, on the train facing the Bangalore side standing on PF-3. The 7+ hours late running Danapur SMVT special was waiting for the final leg. He did not have a halt at KJM, but he hasn't got the clearance for BYPL switchover and seemed to be waiting for same !!!

22617 PF-4 2020 , 12295 PF-3 2045 , 12607 PF-4 2100 displayed the TV screen , as we walked past the crowd . Almost the whole train had emptied here, with few passengers going towards YPR . Exited through the main gate instead of the below the bridge exit , as a 500L to Banashankari waits to pick up arriving crowd. Thought of making a dash, but the seats were already occupied , and with ladies side taking a lead in standing crowd, thanks to the free ladies scheme , stayed back considering parents were with me . The next 500L too came in same status barely 5 mins later and decided to drop idea of bus to book a cab instead

Oh the train didn't start , it's already 10+ mins we thought of taking a cab , spoke a person on phone as we waited our approaching cab. Both the trains were still occupying the PF-3 and PF-4 and our cab soon approached , following a Volvo 500A bound to Banashankari ...Ufff... !!!

If 2658 is a legendary sleep killer , 3 times a week , it has a clone sleep killer as well . During January months , these clones generally come handy, for the RSA of the sleep killer with state named train, ensures it's generally rescheduled by hours

Reached station by around 2215 hours , as the announcement went for the departure of the 16508 biweekly to Jodhpur from PF-9 . PF-1 was occupied by a LHB rake behind WAP7 which I assumed must be the 12658 to Chennai . The rake
...
was alternating between ICF and LHB in spare version , and that particular day, charting showed a SE1 and BE1 coach in consist. Confusion persisted

WAG7 twins passed through PF-5 hauling a BCNA rake slowly trugging along , without stopping. 22681 was allocated PF-5 , so we moved towards the concourse area and stationed ourselves there . 16593 bound to Nanded was stationed on PF-6

Deciding to have a coffee, asked mom to take care of luggage, while me and dad walked down to the Cothas coffee at PF-7 enterance . 16508 had left in meantime and rake of 16589 Rani Chennamma was shunted in for departure. 16227 to Talaguppa from Mysore pulled in slowly PF-10 . Hospet Bangalore express was allocated to arrive on PF-9

WAP7 of KJM shed moved in the meantime into PF-3 with the 12027 from Chennai Central. Looks like the fixed PF-7 allocation for shatabdi is gone and looks like it gets the platform as required

We walked with cup of coffee towards mom, to find a rake being shunted out from the yard behind a WAP7. ICF rake at this time who has a departure, thought went. Couldn't read the boards properly in the darkness , thought of checking it later

The coach positions started displaying for 22681 and we waited for the announcement for the arrival of same. As time ticked to 2250, announcement went, not for 22681 arrival, but for 12658 departure . Slightly thrown up by this , a delayed start for sleep killer , will mean kill is guaranteed

As we waited for announcement, Dad spotted a light reflecting on the rakes in yard and remarked, looks like he is entering . Sleep killer turning into silent killer looks like , as KJM WAG9 pulled in with the 22681. We slowly walked towards our coach position as the train pulled into a halt .

2019 made coach was companion for the night, but a spic and span maintainence from Mysore division. 12781 was cancelled previous week and the rake seemed to have got a long rest and come out from slumber

Mom settled down immediately with berths put up while me and dad settled downnin LB MB onnopposite waiting for the departure time . Announcement went for 22681 waiting , 16589 leaving and 16227 waiting , as time ticked past to 2305 . Checked online, 12658 had departed only at 2307 hours so we would have to have a slight wait

The wait wasn't too long, it was only till 12658 cleared the points and we were off. A loud shreiking noise from WAG9 and we proceeded slowly trotting out clearing the platforms. The rake of Lalbagh was cleared from PF-4 and moved parallel with us for the shunting and loco stopped just as we crossed it , to get back to the pit

The MEMU from Bangarpet made the presence felt as we moved slowly in the main Bangalore City route towards the Canttonment, slowing down at Cantt outer and proceeding to enter BNC, as announcement went for our arrival .

We quickly proceeded from BNC, and a quick meet with the 11+ hours late running 12628 Karnataka express , we laid out the berths to sleep . Thought of a smooth sleep , later remembering that my Sleeper class journeys have reduced in last year , and it was too long since I took a LHB SL. The previous time was by ASK SC special in ICF rake in August 2023 .

Just as I was about to catch up with sleep , a loud honk was heard on opposite as a flurry of blue ICF coaches dashed across . Spotting blue ICF coaches is like a oasis in a desert in current situation, and tried to figure out who it was . The late running weekly daily special ( Different trains running on various days of week with numbering on 5 days making it almost a daily slot ) from Danapur to SmvT running close to 11 hours late , skipping KJM as it proceeds to its last halt , close to time its supossed to leave SMVT .

Tried to catch winks of sleep, but somehow couldn't sleep. The rocking of the train failed to make me sleep well. May be a few winks here and there so badly , that I hear all the announcements from the stations where he stopped through

Bangarpet for 22681, Jolarpettai, announcement of the Kerala express arriving , Katpadi for 22681, Arakkonam for the Chennai Central and Tiruttani bound local. Time was 335AM as we departed from Arakkonam

A quick dash from Arakkonam and looks like finally I slept , for heard my Dad calling me that we are departing from Perambur, as time ticked to 425AM . A slow run till Vyasarpadi Jeeva to let a freight move over to the main line , moved without stopping straight to proceed into PF-9 of Chennai Central with a TNP WDM-7 awaiting to shunt a ICF rake from PF-8

ICF rake with SWR markings .... Who is this guy... The same guy whom we spotted the previous evening getting pulled out from pitline !!! The 12658 Mail was on PF-8 with the AC attenders going about their job of folding the bedsheets of the night run . Announcement went on for the departure of Vijayawada bound Vande Bharat from PF-2A and a delayed GT of 4.5 hours and Navajeevan entering shortly close to time . PF-10 had the rake of Kovai Brindavan RSA, the crowd in UR indicating it was the Kovai bound Kovai having to leave at 610AM. Time ticked to 445AM , we were 15 mins ahead and true to the name, I killed my sleep the previous night. Walked out of the station to catch the MTC A1 which didn't turn up for 15 mins...realised it was a newly declared public holiday in TN that day for Thai Poosam , a long weekend and buses were on long duty , settled in an auto to go home, to catch up on sleep I lost with the clone "sleep killer"

Getting a ticket on return journey - most wanted thing and the most difficult thing . Specials at times comes in handy in such situations, even with a one month in hand . Special always comes at a price of delays , but anyway a train reaching destination around lunch isn't going to affect a working day . So B3 coach gets booked for the journey RJY to SMVT on a Monday evening , 26th November 2023 by the VSKP SMVT express

Finishing the Rajamundhry circuit , arrive at RJY station by
...
450PM and with an hour and half to go for the train arrival, we wait on PF-1 in the waiting room . It isn't very tough to pass time in a station on main track, when arrivals departures are plenty . The 22884 Garib rath is one time today, unlike our journey the previous week and it's long left. PF-1 was occupied by the Kakinada Tirupati express slowly making way out , and It was time of Corromandel to depart from PF-3 while we enter , as time clicks close to 5PM

Few minutes later , the 12845 SMVT superfast arrives from Bhubaneshwar onto PF-2 , almost 10 mins before schedule time . Janmabhoomi in meantime was received on PF-3 in opposite direction . Janmabhoomi left soon , while the Bhubaneswar express still waited , as the announcement went for the 12839 Mail to arrive onto PF-1

Expected that 12839 might take lead over 12845 , and just as WAP-7 entered into PF-1 around 520PM with 12839, the 12845 gave a parallel exit from PF-2 . The ceowd in UR and SL gave a lesser unpleasant look compared to the lifted MB in the SL's. Are guys still having afternoon siesta , or people just lying down entire day since train left HWH the previous night . Get up guys , it's dusk time

The halt for 12839 was pretty long enough to miss the freight action that was sent off in the gap on opposite . But my heart was thumping . Having a week's luggage to board and a mid station, the platform , sorry even train is missing from the display board . Boards prominence was more towards 22502 coming from NTSK towards SMVT, so I walked to the enquiry counter

SMVT special platform please I said - sir back to back trains to SMVT, number please he smiled .. 08543 Visakaptnam SMVT - Oh - PF-1 sir majorly announcement will come , he replied. Thanking him, went back , keeping an ear for announcement , lest the platform changes at last

The waiting room which was empty till then, is filled to brim.now . Just one seat was empty now and occupy myself there , keeping watch outisde. A train silently moves into PF-3 sans any announcement and pulls to a halt . 22808 MAS SRC AC express says the board visible in the long distance . Sans announcement, as robotic, an horn was given and rake soon left

The full moon shines brightly just over the platform -1 and for a moment my mind flashes . Time was 1750 hours , and it was the Karthigai month , the time for Karthigai deepam at Tiruvannamalai. Came back to waiting room and noticed my mom watching the live stream in phone with ears plugged in .

Walked through the available space , no seats now with crowd waiting for the 2 prime trains of the region to arrive . Pull out the earplugs from my mom , to her much angry face . Watch the moon outside instead of mobile, I said sternly. Wait for the deepam last moment please she replied . Ok I said , as the final touch was given for the deepam

Announcement went on for the 17488 Tirumala express to Tirupati , in the LHB avatar to make the way in, and the crowd slowly moved out . 25% space free , that's it , we still have to wait , I said as my mom went out to have glimpse of the moon. 17488 soon entered , Ecor rake with SCR numbering , the old S15 changing to S9, better than many others but still not as much as the ICF avatar

17488 slowly arrived , took up the crowd waiting and after few minutes halt, moved out , while I moved to WIMT to check the train status . 17210 and 08543 both were to arrive in 10 mins gap as per schedule ,but the gap between them was almost 30 kms . The names of Annavaram, Pittapuram, Samalkot flashed on WIMT, reminding us of the previous day visit to the 3 places . 17210 was very few minutes late while 08543 was almost 30 mins. Special treatment has already started

WAG7 twins pull into PF-2 in meantime, giving many a sign of relief . 22641 Shalimar express made its way into PF-3. This guy only overtook us at last moment last week remember , I asked , jokingly nudging my mom... Andha Kadangaarana idhu , today nothing to do she replied . We will get someone, we are special, I replied .

Announcement went for the Seshu to arrive on PF-1 shortly and more crowd vacated from retiring room . Still crowd awaited

How many trains to Bangalore today ?? asked Dad hearing Seshu announcement. 12863, 18463 went before we came , 12845 came after we came , 17210 coming now , our train and 22502 coming in late by 90 mins , I said .. and still you got ticket only in this , which reaches by 1230?? Yes , I said , others were in waitlist, 12845 had the least waitlist , and good running time , but didn't want to risk it , I replied . But weekend evening and trains reaching late , but still crowded , he said . Vizag doesn't have a dedicated train to either Bangalore or Madras , only Hyderabad has regular ones , I said, as BZA WAP4 pulled into PF-1 with the rake of 17210. Time ticked close to 630PM

Next should be ours , let's go out , Dad said . Yes 20 kms away as per WIMT, we will go i said , wearing my backpack and dragging the suitcases. Slowly walked into PF-1 as announcement went on for 08543 VSKP BNC express

What??? BNC express.. yipee my mom said. Wait , i guess announcement is wrong I said . KJM, SMVT or BNC what difference you think will make when you book a cab home , asked Dad. Fare I replied !!

Time clicked close to 1850 hours as the light beamed at the corner. The BCNA rake still waited on PF-2 . Now came the suspense ...special getting special treatment , what will be the loco link.. just railfan things come into mind as train comes close to us - BZA WAG5A silver with brown border on face !!!! We are indeed special !!

The WAG5A slowly chugged in with 20 mins delay , coming to a halt on PF-1. B1 and B2 merged with rake while B3 was completely out of place. A pretty clean PoH and refurbished 2008 coach . Occupied our LB, LB, MB in 2nd bay . Many people had already taken up their berths and we settled comfortably.

The coach was filled with RAC in SLB, indicating the patronage for the special, that's not going to drop off anyone for office hours next day. The crowd in this section is full
...
requiring a dedicated daily for this section.

We slowly pulled out of Rajamundhry , moving out of the town past the Gowthami ghat and we awaited for the final curve for one more ride over the Godavari , which also marks the end of our trip. The darkness had completely set in , but the ICF rake moving over the bridge is not a opportunity to miss hearing. The wheels thundered as the girders swayed about and a long sojourn over the waters bathing in the light of the full moon, we were off Rajamundhry , as I took a deep breath remiscising the memories of the previous week . We soon pulled into Nidadavolu junction

It was pretty dark to make out anything , though the route taken by the train would have been a splendour to watch in day time. Quickly completed our dinner of Kara dosai and chappaati we had got , as we passed through the towns of Tanuku, Bhimavaram, taking in more passengers as we kept moving . We were just trailing the Seshadri and we hoped that we would just reach behind him

Kept watching with wIMT the way we were moving. We were constantly maintaining 75-80kmph and with distance reducing and slack reducing , we expected a before time arrival at Vijayawada

Time ticked close to 930PM as a line joined us from our left , coming parallelly, indicating we were approaching a junction. It was line from Machilipatnam making the way inside and we pulled into PF-2 of Gudivada junction , 10 mins ahead of schedule. PF-1 had Seshadri waiting, after arriving ahead of schedule , and gave a start just as we were entering , giving a small parallel run. Laid down the berth to rest

It was a pretty long rest . Woke up once during night , to see us held up long , and a train screaming past us taking the lead . It was around 430AM so slept back

Woke up, to check WIMT that we were crossing Srikalahasthi as time ticked past 620AM. Delay was pretty less and it looked like we could make up to Bangalore with pretty less delay. Our predecessor Seshadri was way ahead by this time

We stopped at RU outer as time ticked to 645AM. The recent rains has made the out field pretty wet , and morning drizzle made a crisp weather around . The egrets and drongos went around morning breakfast , but the entrance to the junction was still on hold

What seemed like a eternity , and a ICF Krishna express bound to Adilabad slowly pulling past us, we got the starter as time ticked to 715AM . We slowly cleared the joints to enter the Renigunta station , pulling past a arriving Vande Bharat from Chennai to Vijayawada on PF-2 across the island platform . The trainnhad few passengers deboarding , and even fewer passengers boarding as it continues its way to Vijayawada

Announcement went on for the slightly delayed Chittoor bound Venkatadri leaving towards Tirupati, followed by Vande Bharat and my eyes desperately searched for morning coffee. Train was already delayed and we were 10 mins into the halt and I didn't have courage to deboard and get 2 cups of coffee lest signal starts and I have to drop them midway . Plus there was only a breakfast stall close by and he wasn't offering coffee

Time ticked to 730-735 and we showed no signs of leaving and no sign of coffee. Spotted a coffee seller at B4 enterance and gave a call to my Dad to come over to B4 , as I ran across PF to the next entrance and ordered the 3 cups . Dad too joined and we got back coffee to the coach to my mom

The late coffee was despatched but we still hadn't been . The delay at RU outer was less than 30 mins but now we had extended delay , almost to more than an hour . At 755 AM , we finally got the proceed , to take the line towards MAS .

We had exited same time as like Brindavan from Chennai and we had a race to start , who will reach AJJ byepass first . Even if we are just behind Brindavan, things would work out, with a one hour delay to KJM

Our WAG-5 wasn't at all ready for any competition . Slow laggard pace of progress for a delayed train, we weren't crossing any high marked above 70kmph . The Chennai bound Garudadri express was ahead of us and we caught up with him, slowly trailing him all the way . The Tirupati bound Sapthagiri, Mumbai bound mail and the Howrah bound superfast from Mysore made their ways towards Renigunta and we crossed them at very very slow pace, that by the time we reached AJJ outer to take the byepass line, Brindavan was way out of competition clsoing down to Mahendravadi

Thankfully we didn't wait to cross the main line as starter was already set to green and points set for us to join the mainline and we set off towards the distance covering the final destination

The speed didn't pick up at all and was looking at the opposite to check the morning Chennai arrivals . The ICF rake caught the attention as Nagercoil Chennai weekly 12690 was the earliest to cross us on the main line . The 12028 bound to Chennai follows us soon and I was hoping to cross Lalbagh before we arrive at KPD , as generally Brindavan crosses him at Katpadi

Near Sevur , a WAP4 showed its presence , and I Wondered whether it was Lalbagh, before a series of ICF hauled sleeper coaches passed by . The late running 12687 bound to Chandigarh from Madurai , meaning Lalbagh was held back by some time . We slowed down, we hadn't been at a really good speed, taking almost an hour from AJJN to KPD 60 kms distance , as time ticked to 955AM, we pulled into PF-1 of Katpadi junction .

WAP7 caught the attention standing on PF-2 , but then again it was a series of sleeper coaches of ICF rake . Craned to see the boards , a Ecor , running Kollam to Srikakulam road , Sabarimala special train that has gained preference over the Lalbagh

We got our breakfast of Upma Vada here and gulped them down, as we pulled out of Katpadi at 10AM . WAP7 finally pulled into PF-3 as we were exiting , with the 12608 bound to Lalbagh , running late , following the others who took preference . The Srikakulam road special was still waiting , may be annovertake on cards. Not sure we are out

Brindavan was way past Gudiyattam by this time , and we just lugged along , the speed now seemed better but still not upto the mark . Crossed the Tirupati bound intercity , Chennai bound intercity from Coimbatore and day express from Mysore. A LHB rake crossed out of nowhere , the SMVT Danapur weekly express, running close to 8+ hours late . Slowly pulled in to arrive onto PF-1 of Jolarpettai junction next to waiting freight on the sidings

Was waiting for bhajji from the Jolarpettai base but only Vada was found. Got a plate of Vada and got back into the train , along with a cup of tea . It was a long wait at Jolarpettai for over 10 mins , before getting clearance to leave at 1115AM

We crossed the Danapur bound Sanghamitra express from SMVT, crossing through the Eastern ghats , to pull into Kuppam , one of our last halt in Andhrapradesh, for the train that had started previous evening at 4PM from Vizag in Andhra Pradesh. The Howrah bound Express , Duronto and Seshadri followed the other locals out of Bangalore , but not much spotting except for the hope to make up but of time

Brindavan had already made its way into the suburbs of Bangalore and we were way behind it at almost 40 kms away. We were miles away from trailing it, not even making it close. The Seshadri whom we had trailed previous evening and were on par at Gudivada was way out of the game The dry winter Sun of Bangalore made its presence felt into the AC coaches , the morning drizzles of Tamilnadu way behind now after we crossed the ghats .

After a slow but continuous runs through Malur , Devangonthi and Whitefield, slowly pulled into PF-4 of KJM, where we finally deboarded , along with the huge rush of the train, almost with 2 hrs delay at 2PM . Walked slowly out of the station , as announcement went for the Pataliputra bound weekly from SMVT to arrive onto PF-3, a huge crowd waiting for the 3rd train to the Bihar capital we have spotted in the past 3 hours !!!
