COIMBATORE Jn Coach maintenance yard has 2 pit lines and 5 stabling lines.

There is garbage every where in the yard. Need a good hygiene is essential for working condition.

There is an allocation of Rs 1.88 crore in the Union Railway Budget, the required estimate for completion of the second sub-way for the COIMBATORE Jn,. The project is aimed at having a senior citizen / differently able friendly sub-ways with escalators and lifts and substantially de-congest the existing sub-way.

Is It a Junction or not !!

Now The COIMBATORE Rly station lost its JUNCTION status. Because until before 2006, BG and MG trains were operated from here, so it is called Jn,. MG service to CBE terminated from May 2006.

Now it is a station in between two Junctions namely COIMBATORE NORTH [CBF] which is 2.6 km away from CBE on the northern side and PODANUR [PTJ] which is 5.8 km away on the other side [South]. PTJ and CBF were well connected by BG double line and intermediate station is CBE.

MTP route starts from CBF only.

---

Up to the end of 1960's, there was a bye-pass line from Irugur[ERODE] side to Coimbatore with out touching Coimbatore North [CBF] and Podanur[PTJ]. 40-50 yrs back it was dis-mantled . If the RLY's restore the bye-pass, Coimbatore again re-gain its JUNCTION status.

This bye-pass line is very much needed for Coimbatore in future particularly for originating / terminating trains and for future sub-urban services.

This line is dis-mantled after commissioning of CBE-CBF-PLMD-IGU Line in those days, but restoration of this line is very much needed for CBE in future.

Not like that. It will help originating / terminating trains. Surly it reduces traveling time. More over PTJ-IGU bye-pass is going to doubled. It also serves as circular route for CBE sub-urban services in future.

The CBE Rly station alone yields 1,095 million Rupees a year which is the second highest revenue in SR accounting for 45 % of its divisonal income.

As per SR GM, Mr. Rakesh Misra, The ballistic re-inforcement of CBE-IGU section had been completed enabling operation of trains on this section at the normal speed of 100 km/hr as against the earlier restrictions of 70 km/hr.
Once CRS completed the study, trains could be operated at a higher speed.
He also said only 3 or 4 trains on a priority basis could be routed via CBE by 2014.

SPEEDING UP OF TRAINS.
The proposal to increase the speed of trains on the Irugur-Coimbatore section from 70 km/hr to 100 km/hr has been submitted for approval of Railway Board.

Over whelming response to Science express.
The no. of visitors to the science express witnessed a quantum jump on the 2nd day. On day 1, there were 7,154 visitors from 47 schools and 480 general visitors. On day 2, there were 11,389 visitors from 70 schools and 680 general visitors.
The no. of visitors who visited the kid's zone and joy of science laboratory and no. of teachers who attended the teachers orientation programme was also encouraging.

Members of the SRMU staged a protest at the CBE Jn,. demanding to fill the vacancies in the Mechanical dept. and Electrical dept. in the SA div. of SR.
The staff strength should be increased in accordance with the introduction of new trains. The existing staff feel overburdened which finally results in the deterioration of quality.The workers already struggling to service the designated trains are getting burdened with new train introduced.

The GM of SR Mr.Rakesh Misra said the demand of CBE people for a daily over night express train from CBE to SBC was genuine as there was enough passenger traffic and all SBC bound passengers from CBE could not be accommodated in the passing-through trains because of quota constraints.
The GM told DRM,SA Div,.to pursue the proposal for introduction of an ONT in the CBE-SBC-CBE section.

The 'PINK BOOK' of INDIAN RAILWAYS containing budgetary allocation of railway projects brought some relief in the form adequate allocation for PODANUR - POLLACHI GC works. This section was delayed because of land acquisition and now, The State Govt. and Dist administration taking steps to expedite the land acquisition. There are some signs of the process of acquisition being completed in MARCH / APRIL and the works commencing at a faster pace there after to complete the section by 2014.

In the 2013-2014 Union Railway budget, Rs 100 crores allotted for works in respect of 52 km long POLLACHI- PALGHAT , 45 km long POLLACHI-PODANUR and POLLACHI-UDUMALAI sections.
According to officials from the construction wing this allocation would be more or less it is sufficient to complete the project.

This MG Section laid as early as in 1920 and the section closed for GC in MAY 2009.
Gauge Conversion works in respect of the DINDIGUL-PALANI-UDUMALAI sections have been completed. UDUMALAI-POLLACHI section almost nearing completion and the officials are confident of opening the section up to POLLACHI for traffic by MAY or JUNE this year. By 2014 the entire section of CBE / PGT - PALANI section become operational.

Regarding ELECTRIFICATION , Ist CBF-MTP section is going to complete. For that fund allocation, project approval every thing is over last budget it-self. As far as this line is concerned PTJ-POY may complete first. Because POY-PTJ-CBE-CBF-MTP section is important for suburban trains.

DINDIGUL [DG]-PODANUR [PTJ[ Section.
There are totally 38 LC gates are there in this section. Out of this, Rly's constructed ROB or RUB at 16 places. The rest of 19 places will be manned LC. The total project will be completed with in the end of year 2014.

The PALANI-POLLACHI newly laid BG Rly line nearing finishing stage. Trail run will conduct on May 2013 this year and passenger traffic will resume from June said Rly higher official.

So far no news about extension of these trains. Only news is commissioning of POY-PLNI section.

POY-PTJ Section
The Pollachi-Podanur GC work was delayed because of delay in land acqusition by the state Govt. between Podanur and Kinathukaduvu Rly station. Nearly for the 10 km stretch, about 40 acres of land to be acquired from the villages Kinathukaduvu, Nallati palayam, Selvam palayam, Chetii palayam, Arasam palayam and Kodangi palayam. Now, The dist. administration working full swing and hope will be completed soon.

The State Government and District administration taking steps to expedite the land acquisition there are some signs of the process of acquisition being completed in March/April 2013 and the works commencing at a faster pace there after to complete the section by March 2014.

With the works almost nearing completion, SR is gearing up for conducting a trail run on PLNI-POY section latest by MAY 2013 and CRS inspection will follow. The team of officials officials from SR carried out an Inspection of works recently.

May be, The CRS will inspect these two new lines one by one. Because The line likely to be thrown open for passenger traffic some time in June or July this year according to the Rly officials.[source :The Hindu, dt : 04/04/2013]

There are 15 level crossings in this section namely Podanur, Mettur, Echanari road, Chettipalayam, Arasampalayam, Kinathukaduvu, Thamaraikulam, Mullupadi, Sullakal road, Kovilpalayam,Santhakovundanpalayam, Nanchakovundampudur, BKD school, Vadakupalayam, Palghat road.
Works completed at 7 places and work started at Mullupadi LC.

SCOPE FOR THE RAILWAY WORKSHOP TO BE MAJOR INDUSTRIAL SPOT.
The Signal & Telecommunication workshop[S&T] of SR,which functions at Podanur near Coimbatore can produce equipment for railways across the country. The workshop in recent years has been able to produce relays, point machines, emergency sliding beams and supplied all over Indian Railways. The point machines made by the workshop met 60 to 70 % of the requirement of IR.

The yard re-modelling works at the cost of Rs 15 crore would help increasing the speed of trains on Irugur-Coinbatore- Podanur section. This will save 20 min. and help few more trains via CBE. More over one more platform would come up at PTJ Jn.

Land Acquisition of PTJ-POY GC stretch had been over come and now the wait was for funds. The GM itself personally appealed to RB to sanction funds to complete the PTJ-POY GC at the earliest in order to restore the rail connectivity of Western TN with Southern districts of TN.
Palani-Pollachi GC was in its final stage and likely to be opened by 2014 after CRS inspection and POY-PGT GC by March 2014.

This Rly's has a gradient of 1 in 12 with curves as sharp as 18 degrees. Due to the gradient and the curves , the permanent way had to be built of the ABT rack type.

Abt rack type means that two steel racks, the teeth of which break pitch are laid in the center of the track and are carried by pedestals, which are firmly bolted down to the wooden / metal sleepers. This is the only rack railway in India.

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway [NMR] service delayed for second consecutive day on Sunday, causing displeasure among passengers.The train that left MTP with 162 passengers could not proceed beyond Hilgrove as some boulders that had rolled down from the surrounding hillock had damaged the rails.
Railway workmen from Coonoor rushed to the spot and set right the broken rails.The train reached Coonoor 3hrs behind scheduled.

Fibber glass roof fitted coaches were replaced with coaches made with metal sheets. 4 nos of such coaches pressed into service from yesterday. 3 months back boulders hit the roof of the train , that damaged the roof heavily and injured a passenger.

Two morning train service between Coonoor and Ooty on the NMR were cancelled on Wed,26th June as a truck loaded with bananas fell into a gorge of 100 feet near Wellington.
However two evening trips of the train were on schedule as the track was cleared by noon.

The SR GM Mr. Rakesh Misra on Tuesday ruled out the possibility of introducing extra service on NMR, a long pending demand by the locals.
"With one track on NMR, extra service will be impossible. After 5 in the evening, it is difficult to notice movement of wild animals on the track" said Mr. Misra.
