IR has seen cancellation of around 1.4 lakhs of tickets per day in 2023, which are automatically cancelled and around average Rs. 100 per cancellation is recovered by IR. This may not even include payment gateway charges.

One, IR has to provide at least double of these seats in 3 years to bring down the waitlist cancellations to a minimum. There can never be zero waitlisted cancellations.
...

In each train, depending on the class and type of train, there are seats set aside till chart preparation. These include for Railway staff, MP or MLA bookings, etc. etc.. These can be released one day prior i.e., at the time of opening Tatkal seats to public one day prior at 10 am for AC class and 11 am for Sleeper class tickets. This will help reduce the waitlist cancellations as people keep in the hope of those set aside reserved seats which are released on chart preparation.

To curtail around 1.5 lakh cancellations on any day, we need 300 new trains introduced with average berth capacity of 1000 per train. These have to be introduced permanently as Daily trains in all high density corridors, by identifying 60 to 80 such corridors on permanent basis.

Introduction of VB trains is supposed to bring down waitlist but it has in fact increased in 2023 compared to 2022, that means there is higher cancellations in Overnight and long distance travel. So VB trains are acting more as capacity enhancement for IR and the passengers from other Road and Air Transport are using these services than regular train passengers.

So we need around 300 Amrit Bharat and long distance SF daily trains to bring down the waitlist menace in iR.

Railways should merge 22547/48 sabarmati gwalior express 12547/48 sabarmati agra cantt express and should extend it upto Khajuraho station and should run this train on daily basis as 22548 Sabarmati Khajuraho express and 22547 Khajuraho Sabarmati express according to below given time table -

It makes tremendous sense to combine these two trains and make it a daily SF express. If it can be extended further need to see availability of rakes / PM etc.

Now that premiun trains are in SBC KLBG sector, why can't we have a SF between Bangalore and Mumbai?
8.5 hours for SBC KLBG, 1.15 for KLBG SUR, 6.5 for SUR CSMT , total 17.5 hours. Say 18 hours.
We can have a tri weekly to start with. SBC DEP 1230 KLBG 2130 SUR 2300 CSMT 0630. CSMT DEP 1100 SUR 1830 KLBG 2000 SBC 0500.

Instead of new trains, they can make two existing trains SF category, Udyan express and LTT - Coimbatore and cut down travel time to 17 hours between LTT and Bangalore. The number of intermediate stops are too many for these two trains and can actually make them to run in 16 to 17 hours without any changes to operating speeds.

A quick suggestion is to merge the following:

16515/Yesvantpur - Karwar Express
16516/Karwar - Yesvantpur Express
16539/Yesvantpur - Mangaluru Jn. Weekly Express
16540/Mangaluru
...
Jn., Yesvantpur Weekly Express
16575/Gomteshwara Express
16576/Gomteshwara Express

This would result in less rake usage and can be added to a single train and made long enough to have more coaches, providing better connectivity from coastal Karnataka to the city capital. With daily service, we provide quality. Travel and make more tickets available. Do share your thoughts on this.

Good thought to combine weekly, and special trains and make a single daily train with more seats offered to public. This needs to be sent to SWR CPRO for action

Pawan express is the best example of how Indian railways has failed in fulfilling the passenger needs. I travelled briefly last week from Manmad jn to Thane and entered SL class to see the horrible picture. In the Sleeper Coach in every berth, two people are sleeping. I am not joking. I tried to fight initially that I booked the SL ticket with the double occupant. I realised that the train runs like this from Bihar to Mumbai in all the Sleeper class coaches with two people sleeping and some times, one more person sitting. This is the state of affairs why Indian Railways failed to cater to the needs of common traveller. Indian Railways on an average denies ticket to at least 200,000 passengers on daily basis and it goes upto 500,000 people their choice to travel despite having the rolling stock, and the railway lines. It is apathy...

of Indian Railways not accountable after they stopped the Railway Budget. How do we measure Railway performance. Financially operating ratio, how much they spend to earn 100 rupees, around 98 now. How much Indian government spend on Railways year on year, now 2.5 lakhs crores. How many passengers the Indian Railways denies travel - around 200 crore people and out of which 150 crore people travel like cattle including Mumbai local suburban trains, without seats for last 50 years. How long will Railways fail us and how long politicians give bullshit reasons to Indian population?

The Indian Railways has been transporting around 830 Crores of passengers per annum in the pre-Covid era and has declined to around 650 crores in 2023-24, which has seen around 180 Crores or around 50 lakh passengers per day. The major decline is felt in the Passenger Category trains, which had almost decreased by 1800 per day from around 3779 daily average passenger trains in 2018-19 to around 1974 trains per day in operation during 2023-24. This drastic reduction is due to two reasons, which are (1) upgrading some passenger trains operating above 200 kms distance into Mail/Express category trains and (2) elimination / closure of around 1300 passenger trains which are unviable due to lower occupancy levels and plying on unviable routes.

Daily Average trains operated by Indian Railways 2018-19 2023-24

Suburban Trains 5,875 (2018-19) 5,774 (2023-24)

The suburban trains have remained almost constant or small reduction of 101 services over this period, but around 10 per cent of services are now AC category trains and will further go up to 50 percent of total services

Mail/Express/SF/Luxury trains 3,695 (2018-19) 3,000 (2023-24)

There is gross elimination of 1,195 M/E trains over this period and upgrade of 500 passenger trains into M/E category, thus net reduction is 695 trains.

Passenger / DEMU / MEMU 3,779 (2018-19) 1,974 (2023-24)

Elimination of 1305 passenger trains and upgrading 500 passenger trains to M/E category, thus overall reduction is 1805 trains.

Introduction of DEMU/ MEMU trains has added in this category by continuous replacement of ICF trains by DEMU/MEMUs.

Total Daily average trains 13,349 10,748

Overall reduction of 2,601 services permanently eliminated from the Indian Railways.

Does this affect passenger services? What happened to these number of rakes? What happened to the promises made that 300 new services will be introduced every year?/

Why Railways are struggling with Waiting Lists / Overloading in SL class:

Technically, around 1195 Mail / Express Category trains on a daily average basis are eliminated with around 1200 berths per trains, thus eliminating close to 14 lakh berths. These are mainly from Sleeper Class category and General Seating category, thus increasing the passenger load pressure into SL category berths. An introduction of around 1,200 new train services can only compensate or improve railways carrying capacity back to around 830 Crores per annum or 2.3 Crores per day capacity. There is
...
an overall shortage of around 20 lakh berths / seats in reserved category of Mail/Express/SF trains to fill up over the next six years. Till that time, IR will definitely face long waiting lists for the much dense and high demand corridors in India.

The Indian Railways has identified and has been announcing that over the next 6 years (or by 2030), the new railway lines of around 30,000 km (new lines or doubling/quadrupling etc) will be laid through actively increasing the rail infrastructure budgets for new lines / multiple lines. The introduction of new trains has to be gradual at a rate of around 400 to 500 train services per year with an average carrying capacity of 1000 per train service. This entails the requirement of around 500 to 600 rakes from the Rail Coach Factories or around 8,000 to 10,000 new coaches per annum to be produced by the Rail Coach factories. The current production targets are around 7,000 per annum, but IR also has to replace around 25,000 old ICF coaches in a phase wise manner, at least over 5 year period. Thus, IR needs to double the overall production of coaches from current 7,000 coaches per annum to 13,000-15,000 coaches per annum over the next 6 years.
