Season tickets on the Chennai suburban trains are going paperless.
Commuters will no longer have to stand in a long queue in front of counters and process paperwork to buy season tickets. They will now be able to download it on their mobile phones using railway's UTS mobile application as Southern Railway plans to extend the facility which is already available to book suburban tickets for frequent travellers on suburban and MRTS trains.
A senior railway official said commuters will be able to simply key in the their identity card number and download...
more... the season ticket of their choice. There will be no need to upload any document.
"It is going to be a one-time payment so the geo-fencing feature of the app which prevents booking of tickets near stations or inside stations will not apply. Commuters will be able to buy their season tickets from anywhere and show it to the ticket checker when demanded," the official said.
The four suburban lines, Chennai-Tambaram, Chennai-Tiruvallur, Chennai-Gummidipoondi and Beach-Velachery MRTS, are used by around 10lakh commuters every day. Around 50% of the commuters are season ticket holders. The app is likely to help these commuters who currently have to submit documents and physically buy season tickets.
Around 1,200 tickets are sold through the app every day. The zone expects the popularity of the app to grow. Monthly and quarterly season tickets are popular. Railways charges 100 for 1km-20km and 185 for 21km-45km per month.
The UTS app, which was launched for the first time in Chennai in April, was first available for booking suburban train tickets between Egmore and Tambaram.
S Mohanram, a frequent commuter and former member of divisional rail users consultative committee, said
"The system will be convenient for young commuters especially students and who prefer to use smartphones and apps. They dislike going to a counter and stand in queue. Initially, railways insisted that commuters should submit documents. This has now been waived in Chennai."
After downloading the UTS app on a GPRS-enabled Android or Windows smartphone, passengers need just tap on an icon to purchase a season ticket.
The ticket will be saved as an image. The image cannot be forwarded or edited and can be accessed even if the phone's internet connection is not working.
