The first train service in the Carnatic region of India began on July 1, 1856, from Royapuram station in Madras (now Chennai) to Wallajah Road. The Royapuram station building, built in 1856, is the oldest standing railway station building in India. While Bombay had its first train service in 1853,...

the Victoria Terminus building was opened only in 1888. Similarly, Howrah got its current station building in 1905, with an initial temporary tin shed for the first train service in 1854. The earliest proposal for a railway line in South India was between Madras and Bangalore in 1828, but it never materialized. A military engineer, Captain Arthur Cotton, laid a short track near Madras in 1838 for transporting road material. In 1845, a Madras Railway Company was formed in London to build a line from Madras to Walajanagar. After some delays and objections from the Board of Control regarding the financial viability, the project was eventually sanctioned, largely due to the efforts of Colonel Duncan Sim and Major Thomas Pears. The Madras Railway Company was advised by Sir Thomas Pears, who proposed two major railway lines for the Madras Presidency: one from Madras to Beypore and another from Madras to Raichur via Bangalore.

Carnatic mein India ka pehla train service 1 July 1856 ko Royapuram station, Madras (ab Chennai) se Wallajah Road tak start hua tha. Royapuram station building, jo 1856 mein banaya gaya tha, India mein sabse purana railway station building hai. Bombay mein pehla train service 1853 mein start hua tha,...

lekin Victoria Terminus building 1888 mein open kiya gaya tha. Issi tarah, Howrah ko 1905 mein apna current station building mila, aur 1854 mein pehla train service ke liye temporary tin shed tha. South India mein railway line ka sabse pehla proposal 1828 mein Madras aur Bangalore ke beech mein tha, lekin woh kabhi bhi materialize nahi hua. Military engineer Captain Arthur Cotton ne 1838 mein Madras ke paas ek chhota track rakha tha road material ke transportation ke liye. 1845 mein London mein Madras Railway Company banaya gaya tha jo Madras se Walajanagar tak line banane wala tha. Kuchh delay aur financial viability ke baare mein Board of Control ke objection ke baad, yeh project finally sanction kiya gaya, jiske liye Colonel Duncan Sim aur Major Thomas Pears ka bahut bada role tha. Madras Railway Company ko Sir Thomas Pears ne advise kiya tha, jinhone Madras Presidency ke liye do major railway lines ka proposal diya tha: ek Madras se Beypore aur doosra Madras se Bangalore hota hua Raichur tak.
