It's not that bad actually... I travelled on 23rd June and it was pretty great... The coaches were spotlessly clean, food was good (not great). And they use Nutralite butter, not Vimal. After each meal, if the coach floor was even a little bit dirty, it was cleaned again and room freshners were used to impart a good fragrance. Indian Railways and certainly E.Co.R has come a long way in the last 6-7 months. The train got a bit delayed after Jajpur and especially nearby Cuttack where it stopped at Gopalpur Dhanmandal. But overall the train was only 15 mins late. The coach attendants although I must say were not prompt. If you needed an extra milk powder packet, you had to ask about 3-4 times. One of the passengers lost his temper at one of them and shouted on top of his lungs. Needless to say that after that verbal...

tirade, service improved tenfold. Before Bhubaneswar, the attendants came to ask for tips, and the same passenger who had scolded the attendant gave him Rs. 50.

This train has improved considerably in the past 6 months. I travelled on 23rd June and will travel again on 4th August.

Cleanliness of the coaches are par excellence. As soon as you board the coach from NDLS, the coach smells of pleasant room freshner and is very very clean.

sson as it departs from NDLS at 17:05, you will be provided snacks which include vegetable sandwich, patties and other stuff. It's strange that the coach attendants come to ask you about your choice of food, although you have mentioned it while booking the ticket.

Dinner was not very good I'd say. The veg dish was average, but the dal was not upto the mark. All in all the food was OK.

After dinner you will be served ice cream. I thought that it would be some cheap local brand ice cream, but to my astonishment it was a Barista ice cream, which is a premium brand.

And by the way, they give you one water bottle as soon as you board. You are entitled to 2. Be sure to ask for the 2nd one. If you ask for a 2nd one the same night of the journey, they'll say that it'll be provided the next day. Don't listen to all that bullshit. These coach attendants are really cunning people. Any unclaimed water bottle is sold by them for cheap prices. It's your money. Claim what is rightfully yours.

I had the upper berth and so I thought I'd have to face a lot of inconvenience because the ac vents are very close to the berth. But in fact, the ac is turned down at night time, so the passengers don't freeze to death. I actually didn't need the bedsheet to cover up anymore because after a while, it got sort of hot.

After about 6am, the morning tea is served. If you are asleep, the attendant wakes you up. A word of advice to all passengers: Since you are all travelling together, please learn to adjust and co-operate. There are routine fights early in the morning in almost every sleeper train I've travelled in because the lower berth passenger doesn't want to wake up, and the passengers who have woken up to sit and have the breakfast that has arrived. There was a fight in our our coach because of this reason. Please remember that the train is not your home. You can wake up in the noon if you want at home, but please not on the train. Other passengers have paid for their seat too and you should learn to adjust for just 1 day. It's not that hard believe me. In fact if you wake up early, you can enjoy the scenic beauty of the Gurpa-Gujhandi ghats!

Lunch is served after KGP if I can remember correctly. It was better than the previous nights dinner. But the sweet dish was some kind of sugar fruit jelly instead of ice cream which was frankly pretty bad.

Finally the afternoon tea and snacks are served at around 3:30pm.

The coach attendants come to ask for tips before reaching Bhubaneswar. I don't want to generalize, but the coach attendants in my coach were very bad at service. They hesitated if you asked for the extra water bottle, which you should get. These people don't deserve tips because they sell all leftover tea bags, sugar satchets and even milk powder to platform vendors. These people are paid a salary and IRCTC doesn't encourage tipping. Still, I gave Rs.20.

So, overall it was great journey. The scenic beauty while passing through the ghats of Jharkhand during monsoon was mind blowing.

True, these days people stay on their phones during a trip, even when there is no signal busy playing games. If they would just draw the curtains and look outside, I bet they will never look back to their phones again. The scenes were so beautiful. And yes, the coach attendants treat the janitor/sweeper very poorly. That's why, the janitor comes separately (not with the attendants) and he asks very politely for tips. Seeing as the coach was spotlessly clean even though the train was nearing the end of the journey, I happily gave him tips.
