Right now, there are around 5000-6000 D-locos working in the Indian Railways. It will take about 5-7 years to replace these locos. By that time, all P1, P4, G5, G7 locos will be retired, and it will take around 2-3 more years to replace them. Moreover, the number of trains is increasing every day. New technologies like push-pull require more locos. So, it's not accurate to say that the manufacturing unit will be idle in the future.
