'Patalkot' name comes from Sanskrit word "Patal" that means very deep. There is a belief that after worshipping 'Lord Shiva', Prince Meghnath son of Ravana had gone to Patal-lok through this place only. People say that Bhonsle Kings ruled this place in the 18th and 19th Centuries and that there was a long tunnel connecting this place to Pachmarhi in Hoshangabad District. The Bhonsle King after defeated from British Army found this place suitable for hiding and went deep into the forest of Patalkot. The area is called RajaKho in Patalkot. Traditionally, the site is believed to be the entrance to Patal. This valley had long been cut off from the outside and was discovered only a few years back. Patalkot has been a home to a tribal culture and custom since its origin.
Patalkot is home to a tribal culture and custom, home to community of Bharias(living for more than 500 years here) and Gondi tribes.
Patalkot express (14624/14623)/ Kanahan Valley express 11101/11102 used to run between Chhindwara and Jhansi/Gwalior are planned to be extended to Sarai Rohilla (Delhi) with new train numbers (14009, 14010, 14019, 14020) and new timetable. Present train bookings have been suspended from the end of August 2012. The new trains have started as of 1 January 2013, with numbers 14009 and 14010. Now combined as 14623/24 Patalkot express with Daily frequency and Rake Sharing Arrangement with Firozpur Delhi Sarai Rohilla Intercity Express. The train is primarily maintained at Firozpur, Northern Railways.
Chhindwara is a District in South of Madhya Pradesh, famous for Oranges, Cotton and Forest cover in the region, it shares boundary with Vidarbha Region and hence the culture is mix of Marathi and Hindi Population with tribes in and around the area. Chhindwara Railway Station comes under South East Central Railway but the outer and connecting line with Parasia is under Central Railway Jurisdiction.
