This train, I think, originally used to go to Jhansi, hence the nickname Jhansi Mail. It undergoes a loco reversal before undergoing the final ~100 km journey to Gwalior. Half of the train empties here. Lots of staff and WL people travel upto here[ in both 3A and SL, only the singular 2A is untouched].

As per /blog/post/3338646 it was 44/45 Jhansi-Lucknow Mail probably during 1990s.

It was extended to GWL on one end by then Hon'ble RM Madhavrao Scindia

This used to be Lucknow Mathura Express originally, IIRC. That's the reason it still loops around to Mathura instead of taking the direct route from Agra towards Rajasthan.

Eithercase, this used to be a rather sparse train with few AC coaches and NO FIRST AC back in ICF days. Tickets were easily available until it was rush season [ read: holidays in coaching hub Kota ]. I once saw it's WL rush to four hundred the day it opened before going into REGRET.

It was announced as 4201 LKO AGC Exp (lst train in Tab 37A) - /blog/post/1222921 #nzTT2004 even no is different now.

however perhaps due to lack of stabling lines @ AGC, it ran as LKO MTJ since day1. den PNBE. and later KOTA at the other end.

by #nzTT2004, it became CPR GWL mail /blog/post/1222921 with no as 5223 since it was then an ECR train but timings were same as of this TT.
